Tip Top Rottisserie Chicken--Silverlake Adjacent

Slow Foodie | Aug 3, 2005 05:58 PM

Have been eagerly watching this place during construction for about the last 6 months. We are in a major Silverlake takeout rut and we await hopefully any new possibilities. Tried Tip Top today and was really happy. This is not not not haute cuisine. It's a bit greasy. It's far better than Pollo Loco. They don't have copies of menus printed up--only in house laminated ones, one of which they gave me when I stopped by to pick up a menu. There isn't a huge selection--whole chickens and chicken meals. The choice of sides include beans, rice, coleslaw, macaroni or potato salad. We ordered a whole chicken with coleslaw and rice. The rice was typical Mexican comfort rice--with tiny cubes of carrots. Pleasing in that bland, starchy way. The coleslaw had too much mayonaise but it also had pineapple and raisins and I managed to eat a very large amount of it. They threw in a small container of macaroni salad. Also, too much mayo. Also, eaten heartily. And now, the chicken. I opened the box to find that the chicken had been cut up (a good thing) and that it was perched on a lovely bed of grilled onions and peppers and roasted potatoes. It also tasted delicious. Really perfectly seasoned. Yes, a tad greasy. The whole chicken with two sides (and the complimentary macaroni salad) and a huge stack of very fresh corn tortillas was $11.99. Typical Mexican suspects--tacos, quesadillas, tortas, et al, also grace the menu. There are also a number of breakfast offerings, none over $4.00. Beverages include aquas frescos and liquados. Nice people. Hooray for the expansion of our carry out horizons!
