Stopped by Lowell's Huong Cuc (best area Beef Banh Mi imo) and as always, purchased a few items that were fascinatingly new to me. When i looked into Wiki I discovered that they have a humongous long detailed entry on Cambodian foods. For me, these SE Asian desserts, and some savories, are the most unusual foods I have discovered in the Boston area. This 'new-to-me' dessert is called Banh it La Gai. It looks like a dark green square packet edged with sesame seeds, 4" square and 1/2" deep. The green is banana or some other leaf.Inside is a square of JET BLACK sweetened rice flour dough with a filling of mung bean, coconut and vanilla (which, to me, tastes like banana!) The black is from Ramie Leaf, which i'm looking into. Some version of these would be perfect for a foodie Halloween party. Anyway, I found it really tasty and satisfying, and not cloyingly sweet or rich (no dairy.) It makes perfect sense for a hot climate sweet. Maybe they sell it in one of those Dorchester SE Asian stores.

The other strange and new item was the same green leaves rolled around tapioca starch filled with dried fish and shrimp. For some reason (maybe the texture) they made me think of smoked whitefish. Including them on a smoked fish platter would be a kick to watch the responses!
