first story: last week in the bronx, on a weekday evening around 7 pm, at the corner of westchester and ward under the 6 train, i happened across a taco truck (more like a van) with an excellent vibe and a great smell coming from it. i bought three carnitas tacos. they were quite excellent, by a margin the best carnitas i've had from trucks in new york. i'm not sure if the van takes up this location all the time, nor do i remember its name, but it was painted light blue.
second story: last night around 2 am, i walked past a new (they have been around 3 months) tacqueria on broadway at 29th street in astoria. this place reminded me very much of the tacquerias i saw in mexico city -- it was open and facing the street there was a big al pastor cooking plus a big frying plate with various meats frying in a circle -- this is a setup i hadn't seen in new york before but was everywhere in DF. i wasn't that hungry so i just got a single taco al pastor for $1.50, which was very, very good. (tiny round corn tortillas just like in the DF.) there was a line at 2 am, which is a very good sign in my estimation. they also have a sit down area. not sure what hour they open, but they might just be open late.
