Hey all, long time lurker, just signed up finally.
The old Boloco near my house (Boston Ave. and Curtis st., Medford) was recently replaced by Tamper Cafe (website apparently not yet active). My wife and I stopped in this morning to see if we had a good walkable-distance cafe finally. (We love Danish Pastry House for pastry, not so much for a cafe.)
Decor: generic wood and black-pipe cafe interior fixtures, with edison bulbs. Nice enough.
Ambiance: a bit stark, clearly they just renovated and haven't really settled in yet. There's a nice turntable behind the counter running through a legit EQ/amp stack, and it was playing... something innocuous while we were there.
Food: Looked like a decent breakfast menu, had brunch options and a few lunch options as well. (I think they need to flesh out the lunch menu.) There's a manifesto on the wall about how Jason makes everything himself, and in fact even the bread appeared to be their own. Didn't eat anything though, so I'll have to defer on this part for now.
Tea: None. They have iced tea on the menu, but no hot tea options. A little odd.
Coffee: (Coffee nerd alert)
They use Great Barrington roasters, so yay local(ish), not my personal favorite roaster but I'll survive. They have a solid espresso machine, no variable pressure heads but not just an entry level machine. We both had cappuccinos: the barista pulled competent shots and didn't scald the milk, so I'd already take it over many other cafes in the area. Latte art... non-existent. I suspect she's new to pulling shots, but seems to have the basics figured out.
I've heard good things about the cold brew and will be trying that next time I stop in.
All in all, we were happy with the visit and are looking forward to trying the food.
Anyone else been in yet?
