We lured good friends to San Francisco with the promise of dinner at Tamal — fullfilling every expectation from the excellent posts on Chowhound.

Wine: Paul Hobbs Selections 'El Felino' Malbec, Mendoza, Argentina '02 — a great wine/food pairing - matching the assertive tastes at the table with big "rich, spicy fruit".

Service was friendly, attentive, and gracious - with an offer to expand the small plate items from 3 per plate — to 4 to accommodate our table of four...

Crema de Plátano Macho - richly golden, creamy, spicy plantain soup -this is happiness perfected

Tamal de Puerco - a light masa filled with succulent roast pork

Cordita de Chicaron -an excellent "special of the day" offering of fresh, piquant, and rich flavors

Empanaditas de Cangrejo - generous bites of a tender crust with fresh crab

Chile Relleno - bursting with goat cheese, asiago, manchego, corn and tomato

Brochetas de Cordero - two generous skewers of griled New Zealand lamb tenderloin, with a hint of mint, seared with coco/canella and meltingly tender.

Chocolate Tamal - nothing bests the chocolate and chile combo for dessert
