Well, it's not THAT much of a secret, I saw a mention in passing on a prime rib thread a few weeks back.
We visited the Tam O'Shanter restaurant on Los Feliz Blvd. in Atwater Village this morning for Brunch. I've always been captivated by the exterior, and the interior didn't disappoint. Dark and cozy, with red vinyl wing back chairs, tapestries, and tartan plaids everywhere. They sell beer by the half-yard and all the servers wear costumes which are very cute. Somehow, in that dark atmosphere, they don't seem over the top. It's just seems very "throw back" and retro, which I always enjoy.
Brunch included champagne, nothing fancy there. I had the crepes with chicken and mushrooms in a cream sauce and my husband had the hash. Really lovely roast beef hash, and with the included muffins/strawberry butter/first course, an entree price of $16-$33 wasn't too outrageous. Everyone made a big deal about it being our first time there, which I thought was funny.
Anyway, the secret...in the bar area, there is a carving station where they make what appear to be the BEST SANDWICHES EVER. The manager told me they were voted "top three sandwich in Los Angeles" by the LA Times, but I haven't verified that.
The carver took a massive, juicy, wonderful looking piece of corned beer from an oven and carved the most lovely sandwich for the lady waiting there. They have house made chips and I believe other meats include roast turkey, brisket, and roast beef. The line for sandwiches was long, and everyone looked like a regular. For $9.00 the sandwich looked huge and there was mention of a small salad bar that is open on week day lunches to round out the meal.
Looking forward to a lunch trip there soon...
