Reading past posts about cupcakes made me hunger for them so I tried these three. I also went to Clementine twice within the past week but they didn't have cupcakes available either time.
The best was clearly Auntie Ems in Eagle Rock (4616 Eagle Rock Blvd.). Got a vanilla and a red velvet. They are HUGE, terrificly moist cake and thick, rich, delicious frosting. They make other kinds but there were only a few cupcakes left when I got there late afternoon.
The Alcove in Los Feliz (1929 Hillhurst Ave)was also very good. Their cupcakes are smaller and have the homemade, hand decorated look (some have a "kids in the kitchen" look). The one I tried was very tasty - rich chocolate cake with sweet (but not too sweet) white frosting and sprinkles.
Joan's on Third (8350 W. 3rd St., Los Angeles) brought up the rear with a shockingly dry cake. For the high price and the small size, the one I had tasted like it had been there for a week. The frosting was a little better but way too sweet. Very poor showing but perhaps an anomaly as there have been so many raves here about all their food.
Still gotta try those Clementine cakes. I think I may just have to order a dozen so I know I'll get them.
