Taco Grande Tortas (Fresno)

If anyone in the Fresno/Clovis area is mourning the loss of Torta Express (which is now the Cracked Pepper Bistro), I would highly recommend the tortas at Taco Grande. Hubby and I stopped by the other day for some lunch and I ordered the chicken torta. It was pure deliciousness!

The bread was soft and acted like a sponge, absorbing a lot of the sauce from the chicken. The sandwich came dressed with sour cream, avocado, tomato, cheese, and beans. You then had your choice of meat including carnitas, lengua, asada, cabeza, etc. The chicken I ordered was shredded chicken that had been stewed in a tomato-y sauce with lots of spices. It was moist and flavorful and because it was shredded, was easier to manage in the sandwich.

The sandwich was large, but it was so good I managed to finish it. Taco Grande doesn't have the more "gourmet" offerings that Torta Express had, like my favorite the shrimp, but the chicken was awesome! I think it was a little over $4, which is a great bargain. Plus, while your are there you can pick up a taco, yum!
