Brunch today at the Tabard Inn with two friends who had never been there. We were concerned about how good it would be after the recent departure of Paul Pelt (in my opinion, the best/most reliable chef in DC; I sure hope he turns up elsewhere in the area). We need not have worried. Brunch was as phenomenal as always. We started with the doughnuts and they were heavenly; a bit moister than before but still wonderful. We followed up with the charcuterie plate, which included some of the best rillettes I've ever had. I then had a salad of bibb lettuce and beets with pickled raisins and banyul vinaigrette. Just fantastic. One of us had a duck egg over a hash of smoked lamb with chimichurri and we all dipped all sorts of things into that amazing chimichurri. I had a terrific jambalaya - as good as I've ever had. The omelette was said to be excellent. The only loser of the day was the orange creme brulee. It was served in a pastry crust with a scoop of dark chocolate ice cream and an intense raspberry coulis. The crust did it no favors and even though the ice cream went onto someone else's plate, the brulee was overwhelmed by the coulis. The others shared a rhubarb mousse and they oohed and ah'ed. I don't like rhubarb so it did nothing for me. It was just a wonderful brunch, as lovely as always.
