In honor of Mardi Gras, my husband picked up a Gateau des Rois from Sweetish Hill. In my experience, Sweetish Hill is hit or miss. I like some of their items and think some border on inedible. I am pleased to say that this cake is excellent--moist, flaky, a nice balance of almond and butter flavors. Not as sweet and more delicate than the desserts I typically enjoy, but I am already looking forward to my next slice.
Not sure if they have any of these cakes in the store today, but it would be worth an inquiry.
Also, if any of you know of other great king cakes in Austin, New Orleans or French style, I'd love to know about them.
