I finally got around to go to Sushi Yama (Forest Ln off 75) this past Tuesday for their $1 sushi special. It was recommended by 2 different friends of mine. I thought the fish was excellent. The sushi size was a bit on the small side, but that's expected for $1. Between the 3 of us, we ordered 65 pieces of sushi. We tried the following fish/seafood:
tuna, yellowtail, salmon, red snapper, flounder, squid, octopus, baby scallops, eel, flying fish roe. All were very fresh. My 2 companions also tried their "teardrop" special - a big dollop of wasabi + jalapeno peppers. Not recommended for the fainthearted.
We also had 2 appetizers: gyoza and squid tempura. The tempura was excellent, light batter and lightly fried. The gyoza was unremarkable (and took over 30mins, not sure why).
We shared 2 desserts: their special "Taikaikun" (described on GuideLive) and a chocolate parfait. The "taikaikun" wins hands down.
The total bill for the above plus 2 beers plus tips came out to $123. Not cheap for $1-sushi, but at least I was stuffed (unlike other Japanese restaurants I've been to, where I was still hungry after paying $40).
On Wednesday nights they have 1/2 price Bento box - instead of $20, they are $10. I didn't pay attention as to what is included in the Bento box.
On Saturday nights, they have what I called "Japanese surf and turf". For $24.95, you'll get:
5 pieces of nigiri sushi
