New Sushi Find in Richmond

Summary: 26's Corner Sushi --- Clement and 26th
Very good sushi, priced lower than average; clean, neat decor; extremely friendly, gracious hosts

Was in the Richmond trying to check out a recommended Chowhound site, Kabuto Sushi, which I found is closed Mondays. So stumbled across another little sushi find, and with no lighted sign and a hard to read canopy, it was a serendipitous find.

I got there a minute before they opened at 5:00. I was impressed by the casual, warm atmosphere and greeting. When I ordered tea, the kind Japanese server apologized it wasn't quite ready. She then brought over some miso soup to apologize. Then some edamame.

I tried to order some abalone and ankimo to start, but they were out of both. I ordered a few pieces of sushi, all of which they had, and all of which were of top quality and extremely fresh. Delighted with what I found, I said thank you and asked for the check.

But then, the sushi chef prepared a couple unagi for me. Best unagi I've ever had. It was grilled perfectly with a delightful sauce that was not too thick and pasty. I was singing along with the Italian chanteuse on the CD player.... Still wanting my check, I was then served some raspberry ice cream. I was baffled by their kindness and interest in my well-beiing. I said, what is the name of this place? They said the restaurant's been there 3 years. Seems to have a loyal local following judging from the hundreds of patrons photographed on the wall. And I can see why they enjoy 26's. Great sushi, excellent service.

Great restaurant experience! That kind of hospitality is exactly what we used to strive to give in our restaurants back in Ohio, where I was an operating partner in several Italian restaurants.

Isn't it fun to discover someplace new?
