Sometimes, you just want steak and chips. And, sometimes, you want a little something beforehand.
In this case, it was kidneys and baked field mushrooms. Two kidneys, halved and cooked quickly. They sat on the mushrooms, surrounded by a pleasant but indeterminate creamy sauce.
Steak was a 10oz rump which came with a choice of sauce (béarnaise for me, please) and spuds (mash, thin chips or chunky chips). Obviously I went for the chunky chips and, I have to say, of all the chips I’ve ever eaten in my entire life, these were the most recent. Sure, they were chunky. And, sure, they were crisp. But they had no flavour; no substance – a crispy casing, encasing not much.
Steak is 35 day hung and it showed. I like rump and this was packed with flavour. A bit chewy as rump always is. Side order of creamed spinach was the perfect accompaniment.
To full for pud, I finished with a double espresso. Full cost with a bottle of water and service -£35.
