Straw mushrooms - peeled vs. unpeeled

Sonia | Feb 18, 200311:44 PM     3

I've been trying out some Southeast Asian recipes. Today I bought my first can of straw mushrooms. I had a choice between peeled and unpeeled. I wasn't sure what the difference would be but being a purist and all, I figured unpeeled would be the way to go... more flavorful, perhaps. Boy, was I surprised to find what I can only describe as... um... certain part of the male anatomy that has, uhh, shall I say, a hood? Anyway, I peeled these things for the recipe and was left with quite a bit of these skins. Not knowing what to do, and being slightly grossed out by their appearance, I threw them out. What's the deal? Are you supposed to peel these? Are the skins used for anything? Maybe I should just buy peeled ones next time.
