At my recent trip to Strange Taste, I had to find out why they named the restaurant so. After all, the name is Strange Taste 怪味 even in Chinese, rather than simply a bad translation. The waiter told me that there wasn't any particular reason for the name. Nevertheless, I did see two menu items that were called 怪味 which they translated to "House Special".
By her accent, the waiter was obviously from the north while the rest of the staff were certainly from the south, probably from Fujian. If you speak Mandarin, the waiter can be quite friendly and talkative.
With my 水鴨麵 Water Duck Noodle (menu translates as Duck with Noodle Soup), I had a choice of vermicelli or coarse noodles. This choice is not advertised on the menu.
Strange Taste does have a breadth of Northern dishes that have been described in other posts (炸醬麵 ZhaJiangMian, 擔擔麵 DanDanMian, dumplings etc.). Aside from those, Strange Taste also has the usual suspects of Fukinese eateries such as 拌麵 Stirred Noodle (menu: Plain Noodle with Sesame Peanut Sauce), 鍋邊 Pot Side (menu: House Special Ho Fun), 扁肉 Flattened Meat (menu: Foo Chow Style Wonton), and 綠豆粥 Green Bean Congee.
They also have a large collection of balls with a variety of filling including 燕丸 Swallow Balls (menu: Foo Chow Dumpling with Soup), which is a well-known dish native to FuZhou (They're not made from swallows but ground lean pork and yam.)
