Friday's first meal was around 11am, so I opted for something "brunchy" at Kopperman's. This proved to be a difficult time of day for Kopperman's, since they are transitioning between breakfast and lunch, and service was between lax and lousy. I ordered cheese blintzes, figuring "when in Rome..." - but this proved not to be Rome. They were as lackluster as the service, a bit rubbery, a bit cold, albeit served with a generous portion of sour cream, which earned back a few points. My friend's French toast on the other hand, looked great, but at no time did he look away long enough for me to steal a piece.

Next was a late lunch in that portion of Cherokee Street that easily passes for Mexico. We chose La Vellesana, in part because of the attractive outdoor seating. We each ordered 4 soft tacos (both of us got "al pastor" - spicy pork with cool pineapple, topped with the incendiary red or green sauce, my friend got chorizo and I got carnitas). A few pieces of the meat were a bit dry, but overall, this place rocked. And at $1.99 a taco, it's a steal. The pre-thunderstorm heat and all of that good food made the antiquing on the other half of Cherokee less than enthusiastic.

Friday dinner: FARMHAUS! Yes, it deserves to be typed in all caps. This is was my 2nd time here, and I think it's one of my favorite places in the USA. It's so honest, straightforward, fresh, and while not uncreative in the least, the food really shines through, instead of being so dolled up in so many pretentious molecular concoctions as to be unrecognizable. The 3 of us (picked up a local along the way) perhaps over-ordered, but it was all pretty wonderful. My favorite dishes were the summer salad (just a collection of fresh corn, zucchini, cucumbers, tomatoes etc., artfully assembled in a mason jar, ceremoniously dumped out onto a plate, and served with a delicate lavash), the creamed corn, topped with some fried okra, pickled sweet peppers, hot pepper jelly; and the porchetta steamed buns, with some really kick-ass kimchi. Oh, and the Scotch egg was pretty cool too. Add two bottles of Petit Sirah/Petite Verdot from Lodi, and call it a night!
