Where to stay for good food in Portland, Seattle?

Hello all,

Long time lurker / first time poster here. My fiancee and I are planning to honeymoon in the Pacific Northwest (we'll be there at the end of August), specifically 3 or 4 days in Portland and then 3 or 4 days in Seattle.

We generally have the most fun just bumming around urban areas, going into small shops, and trying new foods, etc. Anyway, I've seen some excellent posts that recommend good places to eat, but I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on good places to stay that would keep us in (or within easy walking distance of) nice neighborhoods with decent local restaurants (and/or shopping, etc).

Neither of us has ever been to either city, so I just don't know my way around so much - I don't want to end up spending our honeymoon scared to walk out the door of the hotel or something. I'd much rather spend it deciding which tasty place we want to eat at next, heh.

For comparison's sake, if this helps, on our last big vacation we stayed at the Days Inn at Lombard St in San Fran, and we had an amazing time. Getting up every morning, buying fresh fruit at a deli a block away and pastries and coffee from the coffee shop next door, then just walking around exploring till we found something we wanted to eat for lunch, and so on. If anyone can offer advice on where to stay that'd put us in a neighborhood where we could do that, well, they'd be my hero. :-)

Thanks in advance!
