Thanks Mark, for reminding me to post about Staten Island, my home borough. Yes, there's some great food there.
My ultimate favorite pizza, seriously, last meal before the electric chair kind of pizza is at The Surf Club on Ocean Avenue. It's a quick bus ride from the ferry and right over the Verrezano Bridge if your'e driving. It's a round pie, cut into square pieces. Not much cheese, and the sauce is divine. It's a total local hangout and the later it gets, the smokier the bar gets. My Dad used to go there in high school in the 50s, too. Oh, it's the kind of place I love so much I almost don't want to tell anyone about.
For Italian, you can't beat Angelina's in Annandale - it is expensive but worth every penny.
Plus the Cargo Cafe on Richmond Terrace - part bar, part restaurant. Their mashed potatoes are sublime, made with garlic and mascarpone.
If you're feeling like a truly adventurous chowhounder, then walk up the hill from the ferry to Stuyvesant Place and eat at the restaurant called, "Spanish Food". Order the liver if they have it(trust me), otherwise you can't go wrong with their roast pork. Zero atmosphere, but terrific rice and beans...
