I was going to do this via email, but I figured it might be of interest for all.
Melanie Wong was kind enough to take me to a Shanghai place in SF a couple of years ago. She warned me it wouldn't be great; at that point, chowhounds hadn't discovered all the Shanghai options that have subsequently been unearthed and cataloged. I don't remember the name of the place.
Melanie and I didn't like the food very much (can't win 'em all!), and I developed, perhaps unfairly, the idea that SF is not a good town for Shanghai.
Since then, this board has roiled with Shanghai discoveries. And I'm completely confused and uncalibrated. Has anyone eaten this cuisine both in SF and NY (perchance Shanghai, as well), and able to provide a comparison? Are these places you guys are talking about world class, or just good-for-our-area options?
Please don't react with geographical defensiveness. This isn't, like, baseball! I just want to understand the scene there for this one cuisine.
