St. Louis Review: The Wittmond Hotel in Brussels IL

We had a remarkable meal at the Wittmond Hotel in Brussels IL this weekend.

The first remarkable thing is the isolation of the town - it can only be reached by land from the north; you have to take a ferry to get there from the east, south, or west.

The hotel, built in 1885, treats you as if you were a commercial traveler in 1893. It serves the same meal from 11 AM to 7 PM, 365 days a year.

The four of us sat down to a huge relish tray (home-made: pickled beets, corn relish, peach marmalade, apple rings) along with bowls of home-made cole slaw and apple sauce. Then unlimited chicken noodle soup. Then platters of fried chicken, sliced roast beef, and country sausage that was so fresh it tasted like it had been made that day. Also: rolls, green beans, corn, mashed potatoes, and dumplings in a butter sauce. Refills on any of these. We were too stuffed to contemplate dessert, but I think it is included in the $9.95

Cost is $9.95 per person. It was a highlight of the weekend. Footnote: it is still a working hotel.
