Where to splurge

Ray DeLaPena | Mar 23, 2002 09:37 AM

Having just won the office basketball pool at work (See, watching lots of sports DOES pay off.) I've decided to splurge on a dinner for me and my wife that we would normally reserve for a special occasion. The pool payoff totals $180.
I realize there must be some "you've got to try" places like Tavern on the Green ot the River Cafe (I don't even know if my winnings will cover these places - even if I could get a reservation) but, as we're budding hounds I'd like to get some underground input (is this underground??)
While good food is usually the primary goal in a nice dinner out, I actually value atmosphere and service a little bit more. Sure, I expect good food (and hope for great) whenever we eat out and we wouldn't frequent a place with only mediocere food, but I look for friendly service and a comfortable setting to put a place on my list of favorites.
Family or chef-run restaurants usually fit the bill best in my experience. So, I'd like to use these winnings to enjoy a guilt-free expensive dinner. Can anyone help me blow my ill-gotten gains on a good cause?
