Sad news, Sparky's (Ashland & Melrose), my favorite temple of biscuit worship and edification, is now an empty lot awaiting the construction of the next dozen $395,000 yuppie holding pens.
Sparky's with it's five booths and dining counter had remained unchanged and open 24 hours for well over 40 years. This place provided greasy eggs and coffee at 3:00 AM for 3 generations of North side drunks.
Mind you, most of the fare was your basic "not so good, not so bad" eggs 'n' toast....and then there were the biscuits and gravy.
Two fluffy biscuits split, beckoning a heavy ladling of smooth, slightly spicy milk gravy, chock full of ground country sausage with large, crisp edged sausage patties served on the side.
Don't even think about suggesting the nearby Wishbone, with it's ersatz Southern fair and trixie-friendly decor as a suitable replacement.
What next? Will they tear down the White Palace Grill on Roosevelt and build with a Crunch Gym? Perhaps they'll replace the succulent, fatty pastrami at Manny's with heart healthy "soy-strami".
I for one, hope that the parties responsible for this act of "biscuit terrorism" choke on their half-caff, vanilla, soy-lattes!!!!
I want my biscuits back!
