It was a lovely adventure, and nice to experience when bad things happen to fine dining restaurants. We had already cancelled our celebratory reservation earlier in the week due to a mini blizzard with bad timing.
Graciously greeted at the door, I informed the staff we were now a party of four instead of five, but without a bat of the eye, they said of course we could still dine at the larger table I had specifically reserved.
Well after a first course of amazing tuna tartar, (two orders split for the four of us) each in an egg shaped bowl on a circular bowl of ice ( I always do that when I make tartar at home) and some oysters with a granita and cucumber something wow.... (we will return again at the bar and have our own full bowls of tuna and more oysters) Others try to elevate the oyster. Here, they succeed .
The lights went out! And the emergency lights went on, and then other lights went out. For the rest of our elegant dinner we only had generator lights and candle light, and light from the large windows. The entire building was no longer in a brownout, but a full blackout. The staff was running around with votive candles. And all of our servers were adorable. (huddling in the dark corner, trying to interpret which diner required which new utensils. The water glasses never went below 2/3rds. And additional requested bread was served late in the meal to sop up that buttery lobster goodness. Our head waiter, Thomas was so sweet and comped a generous portion of the bill, including a $45 steak that came out well, as the generators kept the kitchen powered, but they neither touched or looked at the steak (they were in full blown emergency and executed everything else to perfection) and he realized how difficult it is to eat a ribeye in the dark without clearly seeing how to cut around the fat.
It's evenings like this that I thrive on. Our seasoned waiter was apologizing, and I was laughing and apologizing to him, because the building was in a blackout and he lost his second seating after losing a night already this week due to the storm.
This place doesn't get a lot of buzz here. I have only had the tuna tartar, the special oysters, the lamb bolognese and the lobster gnocchi and all are exceptional.
