Snakes on a Plate! (at Daimo)

Joel | Jan 13, 200708:33 PM     7

...or rather, in a bowl. In the form of thickened snake soup. Advertised on the wall poster as one of the special winter dishes.

We did not order the snake soup.
Fortunately this place posts English translations on the wall posters. The clientele at a weekday dinner was only about 75% Chinese.

We had a nice dinner, but not so cheap as I would have liked.
Four of us shared half a roast duck, a bowl of wonton noodle soup, pea leaves sauteed with garlic, chicken with walnuts and snowpeas, and clay pot spicy eggplant with seafood.
The food was all quite tasty. The eggplant was not at all spicy, and the squid/scallops/shrimp in it was very tender and succulent. The wonton noodle soup had only five wontons, but they were packed full of crunchy shrimp with little other filler. There was a generous quantity of al dente noodles.

They charged us $8 corkage for the one bottle we brought in, and (remarkably) added a 15% service charge on the bill. This is the first time I've seen an added tip for only four diners. Not sure why they do that. The total bill was $78, which is kind of expensive for this kind of food, but we had some leftovers to take home for lunch the next day.

Daimo is adjacent to Pacific East Mall in Richmond (the El Cerrito Central Avenue exit from Highway 80). They are open till 1AM I think.
