Okay, another one of those long-ago--although re-confirmed from time to time--memories.
When I was growing up in Cleveland, one of my favorite treats was a smoked sausage thing known, in those parts, as a "smokie." None of the things I've seen take on that name in NYC are even close (in terms of actual make-up, not quality).
They were not cookable links (like the packaged hot-dog like things you sometimes see). They were not jerky/slim-jims. The closest approximation I've found is the "kabanosz" at a Polish deli, although those are texturally very different, and not beef, as these were.
any notion about a NYC area corrolary to such a snack? thanks in advance!
