Smoked Herring Q

Bought a vacuum-pak of smoked herring fillets last week, which I thought could be used right from the pack, but upon opening and tasting, I'm thinking perhaps something must be done to them prior to eating. They are quite firm and EXTREMELY salty (moreso than any kippers I've had). Details: Package says "natural hardwood smoked," from Canada. Any clues? Thanks in advance.
