New Shilla St. Paul Report

Alice | Oct 16, 200511:36 AM

We needed a close easy meal last night so we decided to try the new Shilla, which, by the way, seems now to be called "Kum Gang San." It ranged from mediocre to bad.
Started with the mandoo (dumplings), which were fine, but nothing special. The assorted kimchis included a terrible iceberg lettuce salad with French dressing and some vegetables with what tasted like Frank's hot sauce. The rest of the kimchis were ok, but again, meh. I had the Chap Chae. The old Shilla had a hot pepper version which I loved, so I asked for this a little spicy, which it was, but also mushy with mealy meat. Paz had the yellow croaker, which had some nice flavor which rapidly disappeared as he got deeper into the whole fish.
The menu has gotten very strange. There are Japanese dishes interspersed with the Korean, including California roll for $8.95. A lot of items were covered over with white tape.
Sadly we won't go back. The old Shilla was nothing special, but it was acceptable. This one is not. This one does have the BBQ at the table option, and I don't know of any other places that have that around here, but it won't get us back through the door.
