shanghai sweet&savory dishes

On my last trip to Seattle I went to the Shanghai garden restaurant in the International District. There was a whole section of the menu for Chef's Specialities that were all some sort of meat and a fruit flavored sauce(grape, strawberry...). I was curious so I ordered a chicken with grape sauce. It ended up being like smuckers grape preserves slathered in a thick goober and grape like super sweet taste. Is this an authentic Shanghai style or his own inventions(shrimp and strawberry jelly?)
