M Shanghai Bistro - Williamsburg

Cobbler | Aug 28, 200411:15 PM     2

OK, I've been feeling this for few months now, but after taking a new group tonight, I'm convinced, "M Shanghai Bistro" on havemeyer in brooklyn is my favorite chinese place in NY (and the best reason I've found to go to Williamsburg). Granted, I'm a white boy from the Bay Area, so I'm not going to make any claims as to its "authenticity," but it sure tastes like the Chinese food I grew up with....fresh, not-greasy, not all cooked in the same syrupy sauce, and yet pretty familiar (i.e, not whole fish or mystery meat in a tofu shell). I mean no offense to people who are really into Chinatown's more authentic culinary offererings, I like a lot of what I've tried there, but for anyone looking for some serious West Coast-style Chinese food, this is the spot. It was kinda empty tonight, which blew my mind, but of the 2 West Coaster, 1 Fin and 1 Belgian guy (who's spent some time in China), we all LOVED it.
