Serving Spoon – Inglewood

Had breakfast their the other day, thanks to degustateur in this post http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/7285... for pointing it out.

Wife got the Huge Hugo which is 3 pancakes, 2 eggs, choice of ham, bacon or sausage and grits or rice or potatoes. She opted for bacon and grits. I went for the fried chicken wing drummette egg combo, opted for grits and biscuit for my sides. Also decided to get two of the homemade beef sausage patties on the side to share. A couple cups of coffee and we were good to go.

Service was very attentive and friendly. Our coffee and waters were topped off frequently. A short wait and then big platters of food hit the table. I’m not a grits expert being asian and growing up in LA. The extent of my expertise is, I like it or I don’t like it. But wife grew up in the south and she gave the grits a happy thumbs up. At least that’s all I got out of her as she scarfed down the whole bowl before she dug into anything else. I know I liked the texture of these grits. I like my biscuits less caky and more fluffy and this is how Serving Spoon does theirs. So I was perfectly happy with theirs. It wasn’t the dense lead in your stomach biscuits most places have. Good bite and chew but still fluffy.

Wife usually just slathers on lots of butter on her pancakes and that’s it. But these pancakes were quite a bit firmer than she’s used to and not as light. At first, she was perturbed with the first few bites at the texture even though she liked the taste. Then she poured some syrup on them and she was delighted to find that they soaked up the syrup, softened them up a little but did not disintegrate into soggy pieces like so many other pancakes and she happily kept on eating. Her bacon was big crispy pieces with a good balance of meat and fat.

At first glance, my fried chicken wings threw me. Although I got about 6-7 pieces, these were some of the tiniest wings I’ve ever seen. Second only to Wingstop in how small they were. They were maybe two inches long and not that meaty or big around at all. Also a minor quibble, the menu specifically calls out drummettes but I got two wings and it wasn’t all drummettes. Didn’t bother me but I’m puzzled as to why call it out if you’re not going to do it.

The wings have more of a bready coating to it instead of a thinner crispy crackery type. I liked the seasoning on it a lot. They were cooked fine and was juicy. My biggest complaint about them is the balance of crust to meat was completely thrown off. I’d bite into a piece and get mainly crust and some skin with very little meat. Juicy meat, but very little of it. I love fried chicken skin but I’ve got to have some more meat than what I got. It was disappointing in that regard because I liked the taste of crust and chicken.

The other high note for the breakfast was the housemade beef sausage patties. Two thick patties that were seasoned and spiced well. Pan fried with a good crust but still juicy inside. We were warned that they were spicy but my wife with a low tolerance for spicy foods found them perfectly acceptable. They were resting on a slight pool of grease but the meat itself was not greasy or heavy. These were so good that I can envision myself making a breakfast sandwich with one of the patties and the biscuits.

Overall, we really liked this place. Great food, very attentive service, very fair price for the amount of food. Oh, address details
