Seeking quintessential Toronto food experience

meslgh | Aug 20, 2004 11:24 PM

Hi, I’m looking for some last-minute chowhound advice for a trip to Toronto and Algonquin Park. We love all kinds of ethnic foods (Italian, various Asian, Ethiopian, etc) and enjoy both little authentic holes-in-the-wall and fancy splurges. We have some good food here in Dallas, but we're looking forward to enjoying great food in Toronto. What would be the quintessential Toronto food experience?

Unfortunately, here are all the constraints on our meals this trip(that’s what happens when one tries to squeeze too much into too little time). We’ll be getting in around 5:30 PM Sunday and will be heading north towards the west side of Algonquin Park, and would like to find some good but fast eating on the way. Monday night we’ll be just outside Algonquin Park. An earlier thread suggested that Arowhon might be over-rated; anybody have any other suggestions? Tuesday night we’ll be back in Toronto, but probably not up for wandering far from our B&B near Bathurst and St. Clair. We’ll be in Toronto for three more nights, but we’ll be going to plays two nights (one at the Harbourfront Centre, the other at Bluma Appel sp?) so need to eat close to the theatre district those nights, preferably avoiding over-rated tourist traps.

Any and all recommendations appreciated. Thanks.
