Despite a determination to eat at home this past winter in FL we found ourselves visiting some new, some old haunts for nourishment. In no particular order of time or place here are some of our findings:
Tom's in West Palm - pork was sliced not pulled as expected and worse the meat was slow cooked not smoked; WPB accesses Lake Okechobee(sp) for drinking water usage in season and it adds a certain unpleasant taste to everything it is used in eg the iced tea at Tom's. Not a go to place anymore if it every was.
Prime Catch in Boynton Beach - Fish dishes "sounded" good but I went for the early bird offering and had a skirt steak (way overcooked). Constant companion had apps of a salad and a calimari dish-not so great either. Very mediocre, expensive- return again?? Probably not!
2 Georges in Boynton Beach - Noisy and casual - not a bad thing. I had an app of oysters on half shell which were of decent size and very succulent and I followed it with their special that night of ginger seared tuna with a wasabi sauce - exceptional. I'll definitely go back again especially on a night when the weather is balmy.
Banana Boat in Boynton Beach - Lunch for 5 and the slow, teeny bopper, uncooperative, staff would not set up a table for us even with reservations so we had to squeeze in a 5th chair at a regular table - certainly detracts from comfortable dining. My chowder and the crab cake were both unsatisfactory. It leaves an unpleasant taste and we'll give the place a pass especially now having subsequently eaten at 2 Georges next door.
Bimini Boatyard (17th St Causway FLL) - Bright and cheery location adjacent to a marina. Food was very good. I lunched on a blacken fish sandwich with I enjoyed and my wife had the crab cake salad with a chipotle dressing. Service is hodgepodge, uncoordinated, and unwilling. Is this typical in So FL?
Max's Grille in Mizner Plaza - Food was outstanding for all four of us (sorry I don't recall the exact menu-notes are lost) but again service was lacking and the waiter could not be less attentive.
Aruba (FLL by the sea) Bright, pleasant, beach side. I'm addicted to classic club sandwiches and they did it right. In fact they did/do it right on a later separate visit. I really enjoy the place. We try to visit and have on several previous years.
Pal's Charley's Crab in Deerfield Beach - Lunch menu was the best of all our stops this year and will definitely plan for the future years and to include a dinner stop as well. All four of us enjoyed the entire event (food and service, which stood out for being friendly and attentive).
Sorry if this is not as complete with precise food items ordered etc but the sketchy notes were lost/misplaced. I plan on being more systematic on future excursions even if it gets looks from staff.
