Scottsbluff & Gering, Nebr. Trip Report

Took a trip to the Nebraska Panhandle over the Christmas holiday to visit family. Back in June I requested recommendations & promised a report upon my return:

So now I’m happy to report back.

Had a really nice lunch at the Emporium Coffeehouse & Café in Scottsbluff. Inside are dining areas on the front & back of the former house. Food was urbane & sophisticated; not like what you’d expect to find in this rural western Nebraska town. Without question we would return to this fantastic little find.

Soup was a grain (rice & barley, iirc, perhaps others) & vegetable soup. Nicely prepared & very flavorful. The four of us split two sandwiches which were also quite good. One sandwich was the Grown-up Grilled Cheese with basil (pasta salad on the side); the other sandwich was a Cuban sandwich (the Midnight Cubano) with pork & ham (fries on the side). Both sandwiches were good though the grilled cheese was better. Somewhere in there we also had a fresh green salad with a tasty champagne dressing. We didn’t have dessert but they sounded very good.

The name “coffeehouse & café” might imply that this place is an informal stop for a cup of espresso. While you can do that here, it’s really more of a restaurant with a nicely decorated dining room & a good menu.

Had competent Chinese food at Wonderful House, also in Scottsbluff. Enjoyed hot & sour soup, Kung Pao chicken, & chicken chow mein. The food here is not going to win any awards for best Chinese food in the world but it was good enough to return for lunch or dinner if we are in the area & in the mood for Chinese food.

The real chowhound highlight of the trip was the Gering Bakery. This place has a write-up on Michael & Jane Stern’s Roadfood web site but we already knew we needed to stop here. The pastries are wonderful. Round, fried cinnamon rolls (Parisians) with maple icing. Turnovers with a flaky yet chewy dough. Wonderfully chewy & buttery cinnamon crisps & twists. This place is definitely a keeper.
