Scampi is the Bomba!

PJ Calapa's latest in Flatiron. Loud, trendy, first date kinda feel for dinner. Very comfortable for lunch. Very easy to make reservations unlike so many other similar quality spots. Minor service issues but left very satisfied after the last meal. I think the server was just overwhelmed with work, but he was super friendly and nice about it. Almost futuristic friendly if you know what I mean.

You have their Bomba paste waiting for you on the table. Its not meant for the bouquet of Grissini on each table (too salty) but for the pastas and anything else you choose to add to. I was eating it with the spoon. The razor clams here are great, reminiscent of the ones he did in Costata. Here he adds Prosciutto and unlike other similar dishes we had lately (cough.. Frenchette) this works. The Langoustines better be perfect for $14 a pop and they are. Delicata Squash, meaty and heavy in a good way. I want to try the corn next. I like the way the menu is broken down into Crudo, Vegetables, Grilled, Pasta sections. All get equal attention and almost similarly priced (Making the veggies a tad overpriced perhaps)

The namesake dish, the Scampi with Mafaldini is the clear signature and a must order. The bread crumbs add a nice texture and really make a difference here. The best way to eat it is add some of the Bomba half way in, and its like two pastas for the price of one. The Octopus was slightly overcooked and forgettable after the rest of the dishes. The Cassata for dessert was good. They have Grillo by the glass which I dont see very often. This was a blend and quite delicious. $200 after tip/tax. Go!
