Help me with these scallops please!

I have 7 bags of frozen scallops, and I'd like to start eating them pronto. I want to sear them tonight but I've never done that--can anyone recommend the best amount of time to leave them in the pan, and if I should use butter or oil? I'm not very knowledgable about seafood, as you can probably tell!!! Thanks.
