Did anyone else happen to catch the Sandwich Show on PBS last night? It was terrific, my mouth was watering the whole time. Holly of HollyEats was on there-- did a good job.
I am still wondering about one part of the show tho, regarding Red's Eats, in Wiscasset Maine. I've been going to that area (Boothbay Harbor), for nearly 15 years now, and the prices at Red's have been skyrocketing in the last few years. The lobster roll contains the meat of about a 1 lb lobster, plus a hotdog bun, and if I'm not mistaken, it's getting close to $15. Holly, does that sound right? I know the wonderful fried whole clams are now $20 a box. Now, personally, I prefer to go to the Lobsterman's Coop, get twin 1 lb'rs for $14, or a 2 lb'r for $16 or so, open them up and have the fresh hot meat.
Until last night's show I always thought Red's had to be doing something more than just taking out the meat and putting it on a plain bun...but they're not. I guess I'm just surprised to hear no one complaining about a $15 sandwich you have to wait 20-30 minutes (and up, in July) for....and I was suprised to not hear the high price mentioned on the show.
ps. That's not to say I don't lust after Red's sandwiches...or all lobster in any form for that matter :-)
