Sandwhich at 431 W. Franklin Street in Chapel Hill (located behind the Penang Restaurant, which is by the way is not so good)
Recently opened unique restaurant that is continuous with 3 Cups, a coffee/tea/chocolate cafe. We visited this restaurant this past weekend and were very impressed. While it is technically a sandwich shop, that label doesn't do this place justice. It serves an assortment of well-made sandwiches that are inventive and fresh. Being vegetarians, we had the grilled eggplant sandwich and gruyere and vegetables sandwich - excellent ingredients and if those had been the only things served we would have left happy. However each sandwich is accompanied by hand-cured olives that are made on site with the chef's own blend of spices. The soups of the day - a beet soup and a potato leek soup - were also excellent, especially the well-seasoned, tart and tangy beet soup. Finally the potato chips ($2 for an ample small bag, enough for two) should NOT be missed. These are hand-cut and fried fresh and served to you hot and freshly seasoned with salt and chives/garlic greens. Only downside is they will keep you from ever eating regular chips again.
Nice hip decor with green walls and colorful artwork. Prices and portions are reasonable especially when you consider how good the food is. Got out for $16 for 2 sandwiches with sides, no tip required. The place also serves fresh tea, beer, other assorted drinks. Very nice staff.
The place was kind of slow when we went, so please go eat there to support this kind of food place! We need more places in the Triangle where the food is fresh and well-made yet inventive!
