San Diego: Cheap 'n Tasty

Hi,
I used to visit my Great Aunt in OB yearly, but haven't been back since she passed away. I'm excited to return to beautiful, warm San Diego April 2-6. We're staying at La Pensione in Little Italy and we'll have a car. I've scoured the message board and some additional sources, and here's a list of possibilities for the trip. The trend is inexpensive/ethnic/unique to San Diego- we'll gladly sacrifice atmosphere for good eats.

If there is something that fits in the list that is a must-visit or if there are any recs for the area around our hotel, the advice is appreciated! There were a few French/bistro type restaurants that seemed to get high marks from local chowhounds, but unfortunately that's not really our kind of food...or budget!...so they're not on this list.

Also, any recs for good smoothies? I miss fresh-fruit smoothies from the west coast!

Thanks!
Megan
