Two in San Berdoo

Work took me to the grim neighborhoods of San Berdoo. Had there been a Denny's, I might have. But even Denny's doesn't tred these streets. I found the best bockwurst ever at Gazzolo's Sausages,132 E. Highland Ave. Made on the premises by the Gazzolo family for decades: bockwurst, bratwurst, knockwurst, Polish, Hungarian, Kielbaasa, Frankfurters, Italian, Cajun, jalapeno, Swedish Potato, English bangers, California Bell. A few dozen German, Swiss and Austrian beers, only a couple on tap. A storefront with enough wood trim and such that you know the theme is German.

El Tigre Super Mercado/Warehouse sits below the semi-abandoned hulk of the Santa Fe Railroad Station (Moorish rather than the typical Mission). Stand in El Tigre's parking lot and squint up at the station. Convince yourself that B Traven has been here looking for silver. Go on in and get some tacos. Unless your Spanish is better than mine, be prepared to point. At about 1100 W. 2nd Street (north of I-10 and west of I-215).
