I spent days going through old posts about where to eat in SA on a recent (long) pleasure/business trip, so I thought I'd give a summary of some of our food experiences.
We ate at Boudro's the first night and I was definitely not impressed. The waiter was over the top obnoxious recommending all of his personal favorites, which were the most expensive items on the menu at every turn. When my mother started to order seafood enchiladas, he told her that he definitely wouldn't recommend her choice, and if she wanted something tex-mex, she should go elsewhere. The margarita was poor, which the waiter dismissed as being an off day for the bartender. The food was so-so at best, except for the guacamole which was really good (but it should be for the price). Would not go back or recommend.
We brunched at Las Canarias--was a lovely set up and there was a lot of variety, but nothing was really over average. Another day we ate at Guenther House, which was a really nice experience. We enjoyed seeing the house, the service was excellent, and the food was quite good. I don't think I've ever seen such huge biscuits before in my life! The best part of the meal was the waffles, though. They might have been the best I've had.
We drove to Fredericksburg one day and ate at Hill Top, a place we'd visited some 20 years ago. It was as great as I remembered. We had po-boys and pie--really friendly waiter and a quaint place that's worth the drive.
We tried Taco-Taco and it was good, but I wouldn't have voted for them for best breakfast tacos because the eggs were on the dry side in everyone, regardless of what they were mixed with. Tito's was much, much better--we'd have gone back if we didn't have so many restaurants on the list! The service was also much better than at Taco-Taco.
We also breakfasted at Shilo's once so I could have some grits--an important part of any trip to the US-- and enjoyed it so much that we went back for a sandwich another day. The reuben was wonderful, and we enjoyed their homemade root beer a lot.
For tex-mex dinners, we tried SoLuna (excellent and good service and atmosphere), Los Barios (basically ok, but nothing special except for very good service), Rosario's (kind of blah food and a so so margarita but friendly service. The acoustics were terrible in the room we were in though--we couldn't even converse at our table). Because we had to have 1 meal on the RW, we tried fajitas at Zuni Cafe and it was about as bad as I'd expected. We had to get up and find the waitress each time we wanted something even though they weren't busy. She seemed to be fascinated with the ducks on the river and kept finding out of the way spots to stand and watch them. The margaritas were too sweet to drink, even though we didn't order the ones that everyone raves about since we were told they are really sweet.
We hit City Market for BBQ--was my (Danish) husband's first experience with anything close to TX BBQ and they were great about showing him the smokers and ovens, explaining the process, helping us figure out what to buy, etc. The BBQ was close to the best meal we ate during our 10 days there.
We went to a business dinner at Lukes and it was average, although expensive for what we ate. The waiter was friendly but did do some major marketing on everyone, which I'd noticed could be a problem from posts here. My husband had wild boar chops and they were overcooked, as was my steak. A member of my party was talked into the lobster tail and she just about needed the jaws of life to free it from the shell--way over cooked. The margarita there was incredible though.
We were out driving around and ended up by Dough's, which I'd seen recommended for pizza. It was incredible, as was the burrata sampler we had for an appetizer. Kind of sad considering we were in SA, but it's the meal my husband rates as #1 or #2 (behind the BBQ, maybe). We also managed to squeeze in a burger and fries at Chris Madrid's before heading home--amazing how packed it was at 11.30 on a Tues, but it was definitely a good burger and we loved their fries.
We enjoyed some Blue Bell ice cream a few times too--I'd forgotten about it since my last visit. Considering we'd left temperatures in the low 60's and it was 103-109 each day there, the ice cream was greatly appreciated!
