We went to Sam Won Gak last night on Sietsema's recommendation. It's at 82-13 Broadway in Queens, not 82-83 Broadway as the review said, and the awning says Sam Won Gak, not Gahk.
We had an interesting but not great dinner. The recommended cha chiang mein (noodles with special brown Peking sauce) was as prepared as described, but, IMHO, not particularly memorable. Even the table dispenser of cayenne, soy and vinegar didn't liven it up quite enough. My wife didn't want the fried dumplings, so we had them steamed. They were decent, but lacked the gingery zing I like. We also had bean curd with mushrooms -- mild but very good of this type.
Very good kimchee and pickled radish, plus raw bermuda onion and excellent, unusual hoisin sauce, intense and slightly bitter.
Good service, staff fluent in English, decent formica-table decor, parking not difficult.
If I lived in Queens, I'd go back. Not vaut le voyage from Brooklyn, though.
