Sai-z - Vancouver - 2nd ever visit

An impromptu business meeting with an overseas visitor led me to this place after he expressed an interest in trying some Japanese food and it was near where he was staying. I'd been there once before, but that was over 17 months ago just after it first opened for business. My first experience had been good, as I had some friends from Japan in town for the holidays and we just randomly checked it out after driving by it and had an enjoyable evening with good food (even had some special dishes made after one of my friends was not feeling so well and wanted some comforting homestyle Japanese food not on the menu), and attentive service. So I was quite curious to see if anything had changed almost a year and a half later. Wanting to have a chance to talk more so than eat, we were able to get seated more towards the back of the room which suited our needs just fine, as the front was quite full already at just past 6:30pm, though still nowhere as loud as say an 'izakaya' downtown would have been. Ordered a few items off the cold and hot appetizer list (fresh oysters, shrimp gyoza off their special menu, and aburi shimesaba) to start and they were all delicious and came out in a timely manner which suited our conversation just fine. Followed by a plate of various nigiri sushi - none of those crazy fusion creations or rolls for me though, I'm really old school when it comes to sushi, no stupid spicy sauce, mango, or avocado toppings for me thank you. Owner/chef Mike Nakano did a good job with this plate and the 16 or so pieces were soon gone between the two of us. I think I've read a mix of reviews (good and bad) on other sites for this place, but for me, after two visits, I'd say I will surely go back as nothing has turned me off and there are still plenty of things on the menu that I have yet to try. Might even get adventurous and try some of those fusion rolls, but then again, I doubt it. :)

As an aside, anyone else out there have such a long stretch of between-two-visits, at a place they had a good experience on their first meal there?
