The Rusty Pig - Arroyo Grande

Spent a wonderful weekend on the central coast. After the farmers' market in downtown AG we set out to find the Rusty Pig which took a little effort, I've added directions below.

It's a funky little place, lot's of interesting little knick-knacks, with a large wood fired BBQ pit out front. We ordered 5 items to take back and share with friends:

BBQ pork rib sandwich, nice smoky flavor with a good rich tasting sauce.

Cheeseburger, large thick hand-formed patty of very lean beef served on a jalapeno-cheese bun. I think next time I would order it medium or even medium rare.

BBQ Chicken sandwich, didn't get a taste but reports were that it was excellent, a little on the spicy side.

Linguica sandwich, served on a hoagie roll with grilled peppers and onions. Lean sausage, not greasy at all, could have used some spicy mustard or maybe some of the BBQ sauce.

Tuna wrap, chunks of tuna with slices of cucumber and other veggies with a (balsamic?) tangy vinaigrette, no mayo or mustard whatsoever. Very good.

They bake a different bread each day of the week, Wed. is jalapeno-cheese, Thurs. is Kalamata. Not sure if they bake the hamburger buns also, but a customer came in and bought four of them for $2.40 while I was there.

All items were in the $5-6 range. They advertise that they deliver (don't know how far) and offer slabs and half slabs of ribs, $17 and $9 IIRC.

The place is definitely worth sniffing out.

Traveling south on 101, exit Halcyon Rd (right, left, then right again from the off ramp stop). Stay on Halcyon (toward the ocean) out of AG through the town of Halcyon (never knew it existed, Post Office and everything) til it meets Hwy 1, go left and then the first right (still Halcyon) out through the fields. The road will eventually make a sweeping left and head straight up a hill. There's a signal at the top, turn left and the RP is on your left.

Heading north on 101 take the first AG exit and a left at the stop sign, Fair Oaks, about a half mile or so turn left on Valley Road which meets Hwy 1, turn right. When Hwy 1 makes a right heading north, take the left turn up the side of the hill, this winds it's way to the top and the RP will be on your right just before the stoplight.
