I've been looking for a replacement Thai standby, since my favorite Long Island place, Chaophaya (350 Montauk Highway, Lindenhurst), closed. Since eating regularly at Chaophaya, I've been disappointed with almost every Thai restaurant on Long Island that I've tried. One place that shows some promise is Rungsit (formerly Nattee Thai, 117 Deer Park Ave) in Babylon. I've only eaten there once, but it was a great meal. Order your food spicy and they will comply. Thai fried rice, with eggs, tomatoes, scallions, and pork was the standout. It tasted like something a Thai cook would throw together for a midnight snack. I didn't try the pad thai, but based on the rice, it's probably great. Woonsen noodle salad with shrimp was sinus clearing. I had a tough time choosing between two desserts. One was boit chi, banana cooked in coconut milk, and the other was Thai pumpkin custard. I picked pumpkin custard which was delicious, but vowed to return for the boit chi. There's a Manhattan branch of Rungsit, but I've never been there.
If anybody's curious, the other Thai restaurant that wasn't a dissappointment is Jaiya Thai (46 W Old Country Rd) in Hicksville. Like Rungsit, they'll make your food spicy without you begging.
Rumour has it that Chaophaya's location is going to become or is now a burger place. I haven't driven by to confirm this, but I am intrigued.
