It takes a lot to get me out of my part of Dallas (uptown/Knox Park). I truly hate getting in the car and driving more than five or ten minutes to eat. But I have recently become willing to drive repeatedly to Richardson (which for me is like driving half way to Oklahoma) to eat at Royal Sichuan.

My Sichuan dining kick started by having several excellent meals at China Village Szechuan Restaurant on Solano Avenue in Berkeley, one of the Bay area's very best Sichuan restaurants. My appetite thus whetted, I begrudgingly (at first) trekked out to Royal Sichuan.

Well, six to ten meals later, I'm hooked. The food at Royal Sichuan is excellent. It's in Richardson in a shopping center with many other Chinese businesses (as well as a few Korean ones). The first clue that you get that the place is authentic and good is that there are a large number of Chinese Americans eating there.

I don't recollect having a single bad dish there. Among the best we've had is a friend chicken dish with sichuan peppers (not the dry fried one). (Their we site is down at the moment and I can't recall the exact phraseology.) Wonderful morsels of chicken fried up with spicy red peppers. Not over the top spicy, but with a wonderful bubbling heat. The lamb with cumin -- a Sichuan classis -- is also wonderful. Thin sliced lamb, onion, peppers, and garlic liberally spiced with cumin and accented with cilantro. Both the Chuang's noodles and the spicy wontons are good. Among the vegetables, the sliced and stir fried baby bock choy with sichuan peppers is our favorite.

I really like this place. I'd be interested to hear if any one knows of any other high quality Sichuan places, especially those closer to the core of Dallas. Driving 20 miles round trip to dinner isn't my idea of fun, but this is one place that I'll willingly do it once every few weeks.
