Rosamunde Sausage Grill - A Gift From San Francisco

A new sausage shop has opened up in Williamsburg just in time for Oktoberfest, a San Francisco import, Rosamunde Sausage Grill. They’ve been open for 2 weeks. It’s a pleasant looking place with clean lines.

There’s a mid sized bar in the back and in front a series of long narrow tables flanked by stools. The tables would be a bit small if you were having a full meal but for sausage work they’re perfectly fine.

They serve 20 different types of sausages. Yes, t-w-e-n-t-y. Be still my heart. Most of them are $8.00 with 2 toppings, served on a hearty roll that’s strong enough to stand up to it’s heavy load but not assertive enough to get in the way.

On our first visit we kept things simple. I ordered the beer sausage (smoked, spicy pork & beef) and my GF had the traditional Italian spicy pork. Here’s the beer sausage – I chose grilled onion and hot peppers as my toppings.

My GF’s Italian looked identical so I didn’t take a picture. The flavors were certainly different.

I’ll be honest – I’ve never had a life changing sausage and this didn’t break that string. On the other had it was very good and we both would gladly go back and work our way through the menu.

Here’s a little secret – Rosamunde bills itself as a sausage shop but it’s really a stealth beer bar with 24 different craft beers on tap.

At $6 a pint the prices are really attractive and that cozy bar looks like a great place to tuck in and conduct some serious beer and sausage business. For shorter visits there’s also a handy shelf in the front perfect for noshing and people watching.

One caveat – the ordering process is a bit mysterious. Three different people were bustling around when we walked in. It turns out you can order from any one of them. You pay at the register and then the cook in the back calls your name when your order is ready.

They’re all very friendly, nice people, but we watched a few other new customers come in and they shared our minor confusion. A sign would help.

Rosamunde is located on Bedford and South 1st St. at the relatively normal southern edge of Williamsburg. While the neighborhood lacks some of the demented zaniness of north Williamsburg it’s also far less annoying.

The full menu is on their website.
