I Ricchi Report--Not Good

Sandy in DC | Jun 22, 2004 12:32 AM

I had a most dreadful dining experience at I Ricchi this evening. Went with a client, and unfortunately violated my own rule: Never suggest a restaurant if you've never been. My father-in-law told me a few weeks ago I Ricchi was great.
We arrived at 7:25pm for a 7:30pm reservation. The restaurant was half-empty. We were told it would be a few minutes, so we stood out of the way, waiting to take our table. A few minutes later, just when we thought we were going to be seated, the hostess asked if we could 'step aside' because we were in the way. We went to the bar and tried to figure out why, with a half empty restaurant, we were being asked to wait (not a large party, only three of us), we ordered wine and debated going somewhere else as we were already, 15 minutes in, not impressed with the service. At 8:10pm we were seated. I have no trouble with a wait, especially if the bar is festive and the staff is appropriately apologetic. We got neither.
We ordered three appetizer courses, two (tomato bread soup, basil, moz, tomato salad) were good, not outstanding and the third...oh my! It sounded so delicious--grilled bread with grilled veggies and shrimp. It turned out to be grilled bread (which actually was outstanding) with...has anyone here ever heard of veg-all? The topping tasted like veg-all (the stuff in a can) cooked until completely mushy, then a single, completely unseasoned shrimp on top! I couldn't believe it!
The entrees were actually all very good--two of us had pasta (mine with rabbit sauce was delicious), and my husband had a steak, which looked wonderful. The bread on the table was quite good also.
We decided to skip dessert, and found ourselves once again being punished with a seemingly unnecessary wait.
Aside from the veg-all appetizer incident, the food at I Ricchi was fine, not remarkable really. But the service was so lacking that it's actually shocking. I don't know when I've had such horrible service anywhere in this city. Many times wine glasses sat empty on our table, we had to wait a terribly long time to order food, get more water, get the check. I'm so sorry I spent an evening at I Ricchi. I'm only glad I wasn't paying!!
