Ribs and Crabs by Monterey Bay

On Wednesday, we took a ride over to Moss Landing to buy live crabs from the fishing boat, Beticia. The price was $10 each or 2 for $15. They said they were running 2+ lbs. and had been caught right off the harbor. We bought 4 feisty ones and enjoyed them steamed. One was a little on the small side, closer to 2 lbs., but the others were in the 2.5 lb. range and well-fatted. Beticia's phone number has changed to 831-229-7373. It also had Monterey spot prawns and perch for sale.

On the way back to Salinas, we stopped in Castroville at Central Texas BBQ. Eyeing the brisket on the cutting block, it looked too dry, so we got a slab of ribs (~ $20) and some sauce to go. The meat is very smoky all the way to the bone with great flavor. However, more than half the meat was dry and leathery, and this was without reheating it. I liked the mildly spicy sauce very much. This is about the third time I've tried the 'cue here in the last couple years and yet another disappointment.
