Hi, I'm a New Jersey Chowhounder, currently visiting Sunny SD!!! It's been great starting out with a Point Loma Seafood lunch. (The oysters were unbelievable).
We decided to visit Seoul BBQ over Korea House after reading some reviews. Unfortunately in comparison with (multiple) NJ Korean places, I'm very disappointed.
First, the positives, the Kalbi, and bulgogi were both relatively tasty. Also, they did offer a salad/soup that is not usually offered in the NJ bbq places. Plus they offered complementary spring water (Kirkland) bottled.
Alright, now down to the dirt.
1. The panjan was very sparse. We usually have at least 4 more dishes which include a meat/seafood/tofu dish that can include kimchi style crabs, or at least a dried type fish etc. With the competition heating up in NJ, they usually will also bring over a broiled sardine fish etc.
2. The meat portions were limited in comparison, the kalbi was about 1/2- 2/3 the typical portion.
3. Finally, the atmosphere and service were suboptimal. Typically, they will come by and grill the food for you.
So in combination with the non-discounted cost (19.99 for the kalbi) this was a disatisfying experience. Especially seeing the MANY korean/asian restaurants on Convoy St.
Now I"m afraid to try Jasmine and other recommended restaurants.
