Review: Envoy in Milwaukee

Hi all

This Phoenix Hound had a quick overnight in MKE this week and stayed at the Ambassador Hotel, on Wisconsin just west of Marquette. A neat little hotel. Bonus was the restaurant there in the hotel - Envoy. Very progressive menu. I sat in the bar with a terrific bartender - maybe she was terrific because she was going to Orlando for vacation the next day, but either way I benefited from her good attitude.

The menu is very creative and lots of options. To get a feel for the place, I tried several smaller plates but the entrees did appeal to me as well. Here's what I had:

Pizza o' Dios Mio: prosciutto, copa, pancetta, porcini, crimini and 4 cheeses with truffle oil ($10) It had a chewy grilled crust, slightly charred, little salty from the meats and the cheeses together but it was a nice pie. Definitely sharable.

Slow roasted beet salad. Apples, grapes, almond gazpacho, micro greens, fresh horse radish. ($9) Nice plate, maybe too much micro greens though. Red and gold beets and apples are in penne sized cored pieces - very tender, tasty. Horseradish was cut into matchsticks. The Almond Gazpacho was missing, though - I asked the server was she wasn't sure. That was the most curious part and most of why I ordered it. Still a good, different dish.

Bacon, white cheddar, white bbq microburger ($4) It was past my med-rare order to med-wellish, unfortunately. It had good cheese and nice bun and the BBQ sauce was light but flavorful. Enjoyed it.

Had a local beer (spotted cow, maybe?) and a glass of Zin. Decent wine list, nothing to get excited about. Bar was a little smoky, but high ceilings and good light, lots of flat screens and there is a more formal dining area that is smoke free. All in all, I liked the place and it certainly stood out in that neighborhood - West Milwaukeans (sp?) should be glad to have it, I'd say!
